Meet Dr. Laura Hanni | DVM

Associate Veterinarian, South Valley Equine

At South Valley Equine, our team is built on passion, precision, and a deep commitment to both horse and client. Dr. Laura Hanni brings a unique international background, a thoughtful approach to patient care, and a genuine love for equine reproduction and anesthesia.

A Calling That Started Early

Dr. Hanni knew she wanted to become a veterinarian at just 16 years old. Growing up in northern Italy, she spent six summers working on an alpine mountain farm at high elevation, caring for a herd of 60–100 dairy cows.

Her days were spent herding cattle across mountain pastures, milking twice daily, and helping produce artisan cheese and butter. It was during this time that her connection to animals took root—and she knew this would be her life’s work.

Her passion for horses developed later during veterinary school and was further shaped during her internship at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Canada, where she specialized in equine theriogenology (reproduction).

A Thoughtful, Patient-Focused Approach

Dr. Hanni believes that great veterinary care comes from slowing down and being fully present.

She approaches each case with the mindset of giving 100% of her attention to the horse and owner in front of her. In reproduction, she values the opportunity to follow mares throughout their entire journey—from the first exam of the season to breeding and ultimately pregnancy confirmation.

Dr. Hanni is passionate about every aspect of breeding, from simple backyard live cover to embryo transfer. Aside from the breeding program in clinic, she enjoys getting out into the countryside and sees many ambulatory repro cases on farm. Dr. Hanni loves working with Stallions. She brings in a lot of experience when it comes to training them to the phantom, using different collection techniques and semen processing.

Dr. Hanni enjoys walking clients through each step, often using ultrasound as a way to educate and involve them in the process.

A Defining Case

One of Dr. Hanni’s most memorable experiences involved a pregnant mare named Willow during her internship in Canada.

Willow presented in severe respiratory distress due to strangles at nine months pregnant. Through intensive care—including a tracheostomy, fluid therapy, and close monitoring—Dr. Hanni helped guide her through several critical weeks in isolation.

During this time, she closely monitored the health of the unborn foal, strengthening her skills in prenatal assessment while also learning the importance of clear, compassionate client communication.

Months later, receiving photos of Willow and her healthy foal out on pasture was a moment that reaffirmed why she chose this profession.

Focused on Equine Ophthalmology

While reproduction remains a major focus, Dr. Hanni has developed a strong interest in equine ophthalmology. She works closely with ophthalmology specialist Dr. Amy Knollinger, collaborating on a wide range of eye cases and surgical procedures.

Together, their goal is to preserve vision whenever possible and provide the highest level of care for equine patients with ocular conditions. Dr. Hanni is especially passionate about utilizing standing sedation techniques when appropriate, allowing many procedures to be performed safely while minimizing the risks associated with general anesthesia.

She values being part of a team that prioritizes both advanced care and thoughtful, patient-centered decision-making, ensuring each horse receives the best possible outcome.

Advice for Horse Owners

Dr. Hanni keeps her advice simple and practical:

Have a trailer plan—and a backup trailer plan.

Beyond Veterinary Medicine

Originally from Italy, Dr. Hanni completed veterinary school in Austria before making her way to the United States.

She now lives in Kamas, Utah, with her husband, who works for the U.S. Forest Service. Outside of work, they spend most of their time caring for their new baby and love exploring the outdoors of the High Uintas.
