Surgery, Sports Medicine & Lameness | Partner Veterinarian
For nearly four decades, Dr. John Sieverts has dedicated his career to helping horses perform, recover, and thrive.
As one of South Valley Equine’s partners, Dr. Sieverts combines extensive surgical experience with a lifelong passion for horses and the people who own them.
Horses Have Always Been Part of the Story
Dr. Sieverts’ connection to horses began early.
Raised with animals and grandfather that had a ranch in Wyoming, he received his first pony at just three years old and spent much of his childhood around horses.
Before becoming a veterinarian, he worked as a farrier for ten years, giving him valuable insight into equine performance and soundness long before attending veterinary school.
He graduated from Colorado State University in 1988 and joined Dr. Roger Rees shortly afterward.
Guided by Exceptional Mentors
Dr. Sieverts credits Dr. Rees as one of the most influential people in his career. Having known him since childhood, he admired both his skill and his dedication to horses.
He also learned from some of the most respected names in equine medicine during veterinary school, including pioneers in equine surgery and sports medicine.
Passion for Surgery and Equine Athletes
Dr. Sieverts especially enjoys surgery, lameness, and sports medicine. Over the years, he has worked extensively with racehorses, Western performance horses, hunter/jumpers, and dressage athletes.
His experience has taken him around the world, including trips to Mexico and Australia to work with racehorses and trainers.
For him, helping elite athletes return to competition is one of the most rewarding aspects of veterinary medicine.
Saving Horses Never Gets Old
Despite nearly 40 years in practice, Dr. Sieverts still finds tremendous fulfillment in emergency surgery.
Whether treating colic cases in the middle of the night or helping an injured horse return to competition, seeing positive outcomes remains one of the greatest rewards of his profession.
A Lifelong Commitment
Dr. Sieverts believes horses are among the noblest animals we have the privilege to work with.
His approach is rooted in honesty, hard work, and experience—qualities that have made him a trusted resource for horse owners throughout the West.
