Associate Surgeon, South Valley Equine
At South Valley Equine, exceptional patient care begins with a team of veterinarians who combine advanced expertise with genuine compassion. Dr. Jocelyn Stedman brings both to every case, offering clients a thoughtful, collaborative approach backed by years of specialized surgical training.
A Passion That Started with Horses
For Dr. Stedman, equine veterinary medicine was a natural fit. Having always loved horses, she quickly realized she could combine her interests in biology and science with her passion for these incredible animals.
That realization set her on a path that ultimately led her to become a board-certified equine surgeon—a career that allows her to care for horses while solving complex medical challenges every day.
Advanced Training and a Strong Foundation
Dr. Stedman earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University and pursued extensive post-graduate training to further develop her surgical expertise.
She completed two internships, including a rotating private practice internship at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala and a surgical internship at Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists. Throughout her journey, several mentors played pivotal roles in shaping her career.
As a veterinary student, Dr. Elaine Claffey introduced her to equine surgery and encouraged her pursuit of becoming an equine veterinarian. During her first internship, Drs. Aric Adams and John Peloso demonstrated what it means to be both an excellent veterinarian and mentor. Later, Dr. Warren Beard guided her throughout her residency and helped mold her into the surgeon she is today.
Dedicated to Surgical Excellence
As a board-certified surgeon, Dr. Stedman enjoys every aspect of equine surgery, but she has a particular passion for soft tissue procedures and emergency surgeries, including colic surgery.
She thrives in situations that require quick thinking, teamwork, and advanced problem-solving—helping horses through some of their most critical moments while providing owners with guidance and support throughout the process.
A Client-Centered Approach
What Dr. Stedman believes sets her apart is her commitment to understanding each client’s goals and perspective.
She recognizes that every horse and owner are unique, and she values taking the time to listen, communicate clearly, and develop treatment plans that align with both the horse’s needs and the owner’s expectations.
A Lifelong Connection to Horses
Originally from western Canada, Dr. Stedman grew up riding hunter-jumpers and developed an appreciation for the athleticism and beauty of horses at an early age.
Although she is not currently riding, she hopes to return to the sport in the coming years. Her experiences as a rider continue to help her relate to the horses and owners she serves.
Why South Valley Equine
Dr. Stedman was drawn to South Valley Equine because of the culture of collaboration and collegiality among the doctors and staff.
She values being part of a team that works together, shares knowledge, and continually strives to provide the highest level of care for both horses and their owners.
The Cases That Remind Us Why We Do This
One case that stands out to Dr. Stedman involved a colt that had been rejected by its mother and was battling a severe infection. Despite the odds, the colt’s owner remained committed to doing everything possible to save him.
Following surgery and extensive care, the infection was resolved—and the team was even able to find the colt a new mother.
Stories like these remind Dr. Stedman why she loves what she does.
