Sports Medicine, Lameness, Emergency & General Practice | Associate Veterinarian
At South Valley Equine, Dr. Luke Bass combines years of advanced training with a practical, horse-first approach to veterinary medicine. With nearly two decades of experience, he has developed a strong passion for sports medicine, lameness, emergency care, and general practice, helping horses perform at their best while building lasting relationships with the people who care for them.
Whether he’s evaluating a subtle lameness, managing an emergency, or working alongside owners to develop long-term treatment plans, Dr. Bass believes every horse deserves individualized care backed by clear communication and thoughtful decision-making.
A Lifelong Passion for Horses
Dr. Bass’s passion for equine medicine began long before veterinary school.
Growing up competing in high school rodeo and riding horses throughout his youth, horses quickly became a central part of his life. Working with them every day sparked a desire to build a career where he could improve their health while helping the people who rely on them.
That passion ultimately led him to pursue veterinary medicine, combining his love of horses with his interest in science and problem-solving.
Advanced Training & Continued Learning
Before earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University, Dr. Bass completed a Master of Science in Equine Reproduction. He then completed an internship at Pioneer Equine Hospital and later became board certified through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Equine).
Throughout his education and career, Dr. Bass has been fortunate to learn from outstanding mentors who shaped both his clinical skills and his approach to patient care. Their influence reinforced the importance of communication, sound clinical judgment, and treating every horse as an individual.
A Practical, Individualized Approach
For Dr. Bass, successful veterinary care begins with listening.
He believes the best outcomes come from understanding the unique needs of both the horse and its owner before creating a treatment plan. His approach combines thorough examinations, advanced diagnostic imaging, and evidence-based medicine to accurately diagnose problems and identify the most effective treatment options.
Whether that means rehabilitation, regenerative therapies, surgery, or ongoing management, his goal is always to help horses return to comfortable, productive lives.
Why Equine Practice?
One of the things Dr. Bass enjoys most about equine medicine is the variety each day brings.
From evaluating subtle lameness cases to treating emergencies or working through complex diagnostic challenges, no two cases are ever the same. He enjoys getting to know both his patients and their owners, building relationships that often last for many years.
Some of his most rewarding moments have come from helping horses recover from advanced lameness injuries through collaboration with farriers, rehabilitation specialists, and owners. Watching those horses return to work after months of dedicated care is one of the most fulfilling parts of his profession.
Investing in the Future of the Profession
In addition to caring for horses, Dr. Bass has a passion for mentoring the next generation of veterinarians.
He enjoys teaching veterinary students and interns, challenging them to think critically while helping them build the confidence and clinical skills they’ll carry throughout their careers. Watching young veterinarians grow into capable practitioners is something he finds incredibly rewarding.
A Trusted Partner in Your Horse’s Care
Dr. Bass believes great veterinary medicine is built on trust, communication, and collaboration.
Whether your horse is competing, working, or simply enjoying retirement, his goal is to provide compassionate, evidence-based care while helping owners make informed decisions every step of the way. He is committed to treating every horse as an individual and helping them live healthier, more comfortable lives.
