Sports Medicine, Lameness & Emergency Care | Associate Veterinarian
At South Valley Equine, every veterinarian brings a unique perspective shaped by their experiences, but they all share one common goal: providing exceptional care for horses and the people who love them. Dr. Joe Francis is no exception.
With a special interest in sports medicine, lameness, and emergency care, Dr. Francis is passionate about helping horses stay healthy, comfortable, and performing at their highest level. Whether he’s diagnosing the cause of poor performance, treating an injury, or responding to an emergency, his focus is always on finding the right solution for each individual horse.
A Passion That Started on the Ranch
For Dr. Francis, horses have always been part of life.
Raised on his family’s ranch, he spent his childhood around horses, cattle, and the day-to-day responsibilities that come with ranch life. Watching his father work with horses and later accompanying him on ranch work gave him an appreciation for the unique bond between horses and the people who care for them.
Those early experiences naturally led him toward veterinary medicine, combining a lifelong passion for horses with a desire to make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Building a Foundation in Equine Medicine
Dr. Francis earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Washington State University before completing an internship at Signature Equine Hospital.
Throughout his education and training, he had the opportunity to learn from respected veterinarians across the country, refining both his clinical skills and his passion for equine sports medicine. Those experiences reinforced his commitment to providing thoughtful, evidence-based care while continuing to grow in every aspect of equine practice.
A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach
Dr. Francis believes every horse deserves a treatment plan built around its individual needs.
His approach combines clear communication, evidence-based medicine, and practical solutions that fit both the horse and its owner’s goals. Whether caring for a high-level performance horse or a trusted ranch companion, he believes the best outcomes come from understanding the whole picture—not just the injury or diagnosis.
He enjoys partnering with owners throughout the process, making sure they understand not only what is happening, but why a particular treatment plan is recommended.
Why Equine Practice?
One of the things Dr. Francis enjoys most about veterinary medicine is that no two cases are ever alike.
Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to solve complex problems, help horses recover, and watch them return to doing what they love. Whether it’s helping a performance horse get back in the arena or giving an owner peace of mind, those moments are what continue to fuel his passion for the profession.
One experience that continues to stand out was working at performance events, where he helped keep elite performance horses healthy throughout the event while treating everything from minor aches to more serious injuries. Watching those horses and riders compete at the highest level and knowing he played a small role in their success reinforced why he chose this career.
A Commitment to Lifelong Learning
Equine medicine is constantly evolving, and Dr. Francis believes great veterinarians never stop learning.
He enjoys continually expanding his knowledge in sports medicine and lameness diagnostics while collaborating with the experienced veterinarians at South Valley Equine. Working alongside specialists across multiple disciplines allows him to provide comprehensive care while continuing to grow as a clinician.
A Trusted Partner in Your Horse’s Care

Whether your horse is competing at the highest level, working on the ranch, or simply your trusted partner, his goal remains the same: provide honest communication, thoughtful care, and individualized treatment plans that help every horse perform and feel its best.
