Associate & Partner, South Valley Equine
At South Valley Equine, our team is built on a shared commitment to exceptional care, strong relationships, and a deep understanding of the horses we serve. Dr. Jake Cox reflects these values through his well-rounded expertise, practical approach, and lifelong connection to the equine industry.
A Foundation Built on Experience
Dr. Cox’s path into equine veterinary medicine began long before veterinary school. Raised in a ranching community in Arizona, he grew up surrounded by horses and the day-to-day realities of working with them. He spent years riding and competing in cutting horse events throughout high school and into college, developing a strong appreciation for performance horses and the care they require.
That early exposure, combined with a passion for the industry, ultimately led him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine—one that allows him to stay closely connected to both horses and the people who depend on them.
Advanced Training & Clinical Expertise
Dr. Cox earned his veterinary degree from Colorado State University after completing a Master’s degree in Equine Reproduction. He continued his training with an internship at Elgin Equine Hospital in Texas, where he further developed his skills across multiple areas of equine medicine.
With over 15 years of experience, his clinical focus includes equine reproduction, sports medicine, general practice, and emergency care. His ability to work across these disciplines allows him to provide comprehensive, well-informed care tailored to each individual horse.
Driven by Reproduction & Performance Medicine
While Dr. Cox enjoys the full scope of equine practice, he has a particular passion for reproduction and performance-focused care. His work is centered on helping horses not only perform at a high level but maintain long-term soundness and health.
He joined South Valley Equine in 2018 with the goal of helping develop and expand the practice’s reproduction program, while continuing to grow his expertise in sports medicine and general practice.
A Thoughtful, Client-Centered Approach
What sets Dr. Cox apart is his commitment to listening. He takes the time to understand each client’s concerns and goals, ensuring that every treatment plan is both practical and aligned with the horse’s needs.
When faced with complex or challenging cases, he is resourceful and collaborative—leveraging his experience, mentors, and professional network to find the best possible answers. His approach is grounded in honesty, attention to detail, and a genuine dedication to doing what’s right for the horse.
A Lifelong Connection to Horses
Horses have always been a central part of Dr. Cox’s life. From his early days in the ranching community to competing in cutting, his experiences continue to shape how he approaches veterinary care today.
That connection remains strong through his family, as his wife and daughter are actively involved in barrel racing—keeping him closely tied to the performance horse world both professionally and personally.
Why South Valley Equine
Dr. Cox was drawn to South Valley Equine for the opportunity to contribute to a growing, collaborative practice while helping expand its reproduction services. The team environment and shared commitment to high-quality care make it a place where both veterinarians and clients are supported.
A Trusted Partner in Your Horse’s Care
One of the most meaningful parts of Dr. Cox’s career is guiding clients through difficult or uncertain cases—especially when a horse with a guarded prognosis goes on to have a successful outcome. Being part of that journey is both challenging and deeply rewarding.
His philosophy is simple:
Take the time to listen.
Be prepared for the unexpected.
Do everything possible to give each horse the best chance at a healthy future.
