Meet Dr. Austin Cook | DVM

Associate Veterinarian, South Valley Equine

At South Valley Equine, our team is built on collaboration, trust, and a commitment to doing what’s best for the horse. Dr. Austin Cook brings a grounded, team-oriented approach to veterinary medicine, shaped by hard work, humility, and a deep respect for both horses and the people who care for them.

A Passion Built Through Experience

Dr. Cook grew up on a dairy farm, where long days and hands-on work with animals were simply part of everyday life. He knew early on that veterinary medicine was the path he wanted to pursue.

It wasn’t until his undergraduate years—while working at South Valley Large Animal Clinic—that equine medicine truly captured his interest. Seeing the level of specialization, advanced diagnostics, and surgical capabilities within the field opened his eyes to what was possible in caring for these athletes and companions.

That experience solidified his commitment to equine medicine and set the foundation for his career.

A Team-Based, Thoughtful Approach

Dr. Cook believes the best outcomes come from collaboration.

His approach centers around working closely with owners, trainers, and other care providers to make thoughtful, informed decisions. Rather than rushing into treatment, he prioritizes a step-by-step process to reach an accurate diagnosis first—knowing that clarity leads to better long-term results.

This methodical, team-first mindset builds trust and ensures that every decision is made with the horse’s well-being as the top priority.

The Value of Relationships

While the medicine is important, what Dr. Cook values most are the relationships built along the way.

Caring for horses over time creates a level of trust that turns clients into friends. It’s those long-term relationships—and the shared goal of keeping horses healthy and performing at their best—that make the work especially meaningful.

(And if you ever hear someone ask him if he “needs a Coke,” just know it’s a running joke among clients and coworkers.)

A Defining Moment in Practice

Early in his career, while working in Texas, Dr. Cook treated a young gelding that repeatedly presented with colic. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue, the problem persisted—and so did the owner’s concern.

Just six months out of school, Dr. Cook found himself in a challenging position. Instead of trying to have all the answers, he leaned on his network—reaching out to colleagues and mentors to collaborate on a solution.

Together, they developed a plan that worked. The horse has remained colic-free ever since.

That experience shaped how he practices today: he may not always have every answer immediately, but he will always go the extra mile to find it.

Focused on the Future of Equine Medicine

Dr. Cook is particularly aware of the challenges facing the equine veterinary industry.

With fewer graduates entering equine medicine and an aging population of veterinarians, he recognizes the importance of adapting—both clinically and operationally—to continue providing high-quality care.

While his primary focus is in lameness, he is continually expanding his knowledge in internal medicine, reproduction, and surgery to better serve his patients and clients for years to come.

Practical Advice for Horse Owners

Dr. Cook emphasizes the importance of a strong care team.

His advice is simple:
A good trainer, a skilled farrier, and a knowledgeable veterinarian are the foundation of keeping a horse healthy.

When those pieces are in place, many issues can be prevented before they require more advanced veterinary care.

Life Beyond Veterinary Medicine

Between being on call, managing cases, and traveling for appointments, Dr. Cook spends much of his time caring for horses.

That’s why the moments he gets at home matter most.

Whether it’s cooking a meal or simply spending time with his family, those small, intentional moments help keep him grounded. He recognizes the sacrifices his family makes to support his career—and he doesn’t take that lightly.

A Trusted Partner in Your Horse’s Care

Dr. Austin Cook brings a humble, hardworking, and team-driven mindset to every case he takes on.

His approach is simple:
Collaborate. Take the time to get it right. Always put the horse first.
